Beginning 5-String (Bluegrass) Banjo

Join us at Centrally Rooted for a 6-week session for the adult that has always wanted to learn to play banjo. This class offers beginning instruction on playing the 5-string banjo, with an emphasis on basic three-finger (bluegrass or “Scruggs” technique). We will also look at chord playing and accompaniment styles for singing songs. We will learn to read tablature, learn open (first) position chords in the most common keys, basic accompaniment techniques, right hand roll patterns and applications, playing a melody and putting rolls and melody together for simple solo playing.
Must be 21 & over. BYO beer or wine (no liquor) & BYO guitar (or communicate in advance if you need help finding or borrowing one).
No prior experience required or expected.
About Dan
Dan Caraway is a musician and teacher living in Dubuque Iowa. He began playing guitar at 9 and started studying classical guitar in college. He began teaching professionally in 1993 offering private and class instruction and has taught at Grinnell College, Cornell College, Iowa City Guitar Foundation, Dubuque Guitar School, as well as various after-school programs. He has performed with classical, folk and popular groups on guitar, 7-String guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin and voice.
